Xiaoyu Huang awarded 2013-2014 Presidential Fellowship from Graduate SchoolPosted: 15 May 2013
Xiaoyu Huang has been awarded a 2013-2014 Presidential Fellowship from the Graduate School. Huang joined Ohio State in 2009 as a University Fellow when he began working on his PhD in mechanical engineering.
Huang works at the Center for Automotive Research and is a member of the Vehicle Systems and Control Laboratory. His research is focused on "real-time parameter estimation and control system designs for lightweight vehicles (LWVs)". Compared to standard size vehicles, LWVs are significantly smaller in weight and size, are more vulnerable in car accidents, and are more sensitive to changes in payload. Huang hopes that his research, which is performed on experimental lightweight electric vehicles, will lead to enhanced driving safety and fuel efficiency of LWVs.
After learning of his award Huang commented, “This Presidential Fellowship award is very important to me. It not only gives me sufficient financial support, but more importantly, it provides me full confidence to further devote myself to the field of automotive engineering and in a broader sense, to the mechanical/electrical world. I hope my research work will receive more attention from engineers or researchers, so that the lightweight vehicle will become a more realistic means of alternative transportation in the near future.”
Huang, who is advised by Assistant Professor Junmin Wang, earned his undergraduate degree in vehicle engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
The Presidential Fellowship is the most competitive and prestigious scholarly recognition provided by Ohio State’s Graduate School. The fellowship recognizes the outstanding scholarly accomplishments and potential of graduate students entering the final phase of their dissertation research. Financial support is provided so that the fellow may devote one year of full-time study to the completion of the dissertation, unimpeded by other duties. Recipients of this award embody the highest standards of scholarship in Ohio State graduate programs.
