CAR PhD student, Jiyu Zhang.
This summer Jiyu Zhang, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, spent several weeks in China--her home country--performing research in electric machines. After she returned, we caught up with her to get all the details!

Where did you do research during Summer 2013?

During Summer 2013, I did research in Hefei Institute of Technology (HFUT), Hefei, Anhui, China.

What research topics did you focus on?

I did research about electric machine modeling and control as well as fault diagnosis of electric machines.

What was interesting about the laboratories or research perspectives there?

My supervisor there is Prof. Hongmei Li, who visited CAR from May to Nov, 2012. Her expertise is in electric machines, which is very helpful with my research. She and her students are doing a project about electric motor controller in collaboration with JAC [Jianghuai Automobile Company].

How will you apply your work there to your thesis topics or other work?

I will apply the knowledge of electric machines which I learned from there as a solid foundation for my research in CAR. And my understanding about the electric machines will help me strengthen the credibility of  my thesis as well.

Anything fun you did in your free time?

I met with my old classmates since HFUT is my undergraduate institute. I feel very excited about its improvement and changes when I walked around the campus.

Anything else you want to mention?

Prof. Li is very kind and helpful, so are her students. They are nice and warm, and are all ready to help me with my studies. I also joined their weekly meetings and shared my research work in CAR with them. It was rather an interesting experience!
