president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). In his new role, Lim will oversee the university’s academic administration. His work will have a direct impact on the success of UTA students.

“UTA’s aspiration to become the model 21st century urban research university, an institution on the move, and the excellent team President Karbhari has assembled are what attracted me to this position,” Lim shared.

“The university already has all the necessary elements to achieve its ambition – enrollment growing by leaps and bounds; a very diverse student body; and a campus situated in a thriving, dynamic and very large Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex with strong global connections. I believe my experiences position me well to collaborate with the deans and faculty effectively, and to support UTA’s commitment to access and excellence.”

Prior to this role, Lim served as dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati (UC) for three years and interim dean for two years.

Increasing diversity among students and faculty was a key focus for Lim during his tenure as dean. He expanded the college’s Emerging Ethnic Engineering program, which encouraged the participation and success of diverse students in STEM fields. He also led a faculty hiring campaign that resulted in almost 50 new diverse faculty appointments – this contributed to a substantial increase of women and underrepresented faculty.

In 2013, Lim launched the Cincinnati/Chongqing Joint Cooperative Institute, which established a mandatory co-operative (co-op) educational program in mechanical and electrical engineering at Chongqing University. It was the first program of its kind in China.

At UC, Lim served as the Herman Schneider Professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of the Vibro-Acoustics and Sound Quality Research Laboratory; the Hypoid and Bevel Gear Mesh and Dynamic Modeling Consortium; and the UC Simulation Center, which is a collaborative effort between UC and Procter & Gamble.

In 2010, Lim was recognized by The Ohio State University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE). He was named the recipient of the department's Thomas French Achievement Award, in honor of his outstanding teaching and service accomplishments.

In addition to earning his PhD from Ohio State in 1989, Lim served as a research scientist for Ohio State’s Center for Automotive Research from 1996 to 1998. He then went on to serve as associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama. In 2002, he became associate professor of mechanical engineering at UC. Lim then served as department head, associate dean for graduate studies and research, professor and eventually dean. Additionally, Lim was named a Fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Lim’s appointment as UTA provost and vice president for academic affairs was effective on June 30, 2017.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Dr. Lim to UTA and would like to thank the search committee for recruiting an exceptional scholar, researcher, and advocate of collaboration and global engagement,” said Vistasp Karbhari, president of UTA.

“His dedication to excellence and student success, along with his proactive and highly successful record in engagement with the corporate world and with the local and global community, make him the ideal candidate to continue our drive to ever higher levels of excellence.”
