Hamza Anwar, a graduate research assistant at the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) and PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was selected for the 2022 ASME DSCD Rising Stars Invited Talks, presented at Modeling, Estimation and Control Conference. Recipients of this award give invited talks on their research at the Conference with the intention of helping to kick-start their careers.

Anwar’s invited talk, titled Comprehensive Energy Footprint Benchmarking Framework for Electrified Commercial Vehicles presents a comprehensive framework towards optimal powertrain energy management of electrified vehicles wherein energy consumption and pollutant emissions are minimized. The distinguishing feature is the framework's ability to handle highly nonlinear and mixed-integer nature of powertrain models all-at-once, doing so for diverse and large-sized control problems along with eco-driving capability. The outcome is energy-efficient operation for a class 6 pickup and delivery truck achieving up to 6% reduction in fuel and NOx emission, compared to prevalent approaches.

“As I get closer to PhD graduation, this recognition helps in overcoming unseen early-career challenges I may face soon,” said Anwar.
