Kassas elevated to IEEE Fellow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Zak Kassas, the Transportation Research Center, Inc. Endowed Chair in Intelligent Transportation Systems, recently joined the distinguished ranks of Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow. He was elevated for his contributions to navigation with signals of opportunity.

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting for this prestigious grade elevation. The number of IEEE Fellow elevations in a year can be no more than one-tenth of one percent of the total IEEE voting membership. More than 30 active engineering faculty members at The Ohio State University are IEEE Fellows, including College of Engineering Dean Ayanna Howard and eight additional faculty affiliates of the ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL).

Being elevated to IEEE Fellow in less than 10 years after receiving his PhD degree makes Kassas among the youngest to receive this prominent recognition.

“I am honored to join the esteemed ranks of IEEE Fellows,” said Kassas. “I am grateful to my academic advisors, mentors, mentees, and collaborators, from whom I had learned a great deal. I am also appreciative of the support of the funding agencies who believed in our vision: Office of Naval Research (ONR), National Science Foundation (NSF), Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Department of Transportation, Sandia National Laboratories, Aerospace Corporation, among others.

Kassas is a world-renowned expert in position, navigation and timing (PNT) in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-denied environments by exploiting terrestrial and extraterrestrial signals of opportunity (SOPs). He has made breakthroughs that proved SOPs could be exploited for sustained, high-accuracy, real-world PNT, achieving the highest levels of accuracy ever published to date.

He and his team were the first to develop a comprehensive approach to extract accurate PNT information from 4G and 5G signals and a simultaneous tracking and navigation framework to exploit low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite signals. They developed a revolutionary framework for SOPs with unknown signal structure, termed cognitive opportunistic navigation, leading to the first published results of exploiting unknown multi-constellation LEO signals for PNT. Kassas’ work has been featured in dozens of international media outlets, notably ScienceBBCIEEEACM, among others, and appeared on numerous magazine covers. His research has attracted more than $26M in competitive federal grants.

Kassas is the director of the Center for Automated Vehicles Research with Multimodal Assured Navigation (CARMEN+), a U.S. Department of Transportation University Transportation Center (UTC) led by Ohio State that investigates PNT resiliency and accuracy of highly automated transportation systems. The university was awarded $15 million in February 2023 for CARMEN+, to expand upon work completed in the initial two-year CARMEN UTC, also led by Kassas.

Kassas has authored more than 180 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, 11 magazine articles, three invited book chapters and holds 21 U.S. patents. He was also named an Institute of Navigation (ION) Fellow earlier this year. His numerous awards include the AFOSR Young Investigator Program, ONR Young Investigator Program, NSF CAREER Award, ION Thurlow Award, ION Burka Award, IEEE Walter Fried Award, IEEE Signal Processing Society Grand Prize and named a distinguished lecturer of IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society.
