The donation came to the team through the PPG Foundation, which supports educational and research programs. Greg Massey, team captain, explains that “the donation will be used toward research and innovation in carbon fiber,” the strong yet lightweight material used to build the vehicle’s chassis and related components.

PPG Industries has been a longtime supporter of the Ohio State motorsports teams. Past donations have included paint products, as well as providing painting services to the team. The Buckeyes’ current vehicle—Car #30—received its paintjob courtesy of PPG earlier this year.

Shawn Midlam-Mohler, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, describes the importance of PPG’s support. “Our motorsports teams would not be the success they are without close partnerships with industry. PPG’s donation is a prime example of a successful partnership. Building and maintaining these relationships is also great experience for our students and is one of the benefits of this experiential learning opportunity. ”
